I got caught slipping when my granny messaged me the other day asking, “Hmmm…no concerts?” Sorry, G, no more slacking off on these posts. For better or worse it has been slow going for these first few months so I only missed posting about the last two shows. The first being All Shall Perish on February 28th and James Brandon Lewis Trio on March 6th. Thankfully the coming weeks are stacked with some good shows and no better way to start the upcoming run than with a some killer noise rock bands at TV Eye.
TV Eye is a venue that always seems to throw something interesting my way whether I’m expecting it or not, and tonight’s opener was.. something else. I was fascinated to say the least. It was like some 80s-inspired experimental electronic and very expressive vocals but it was incredibly dull. Even moments of promise were quickly strummed away into mediocrity; the music just never went anywhere.
Thankfully the next band, Facet, ended up being my favorite set of the night. A noise rock band from Oakland and another band that exemplifies why I love this particular sub-genre so much. There must be something in the water in the Bay Area, as the history of sick bands coming from that region never seems to fade. Facet had a bit more of a punk element than some of the other noise rock artists I have been following, almost reminding me of some of the OG post-hardcore bands like Drive Like Jehu. For me, the music fits perfectly with the general mood of the times we are currently experiencing with the raw sound and in-your-face lyrical delivery. I definitely bought a shirt and will be keeping a close eye on this band for the foreseeable future.
The headliner was band I’ve been interested in seeing and has quite a provocative name that is bound to catch your attention. I’ll just say I didn’t buy any Whores merch. I get away with wearing a lot of wild shirts at work but I don’t think that one would go over well. Their music is in the same noise rock ballpark as Facet and some of the other bands I’ve been getting into over the last few years but I would say they have a more pronounced southern rock vibe to their riffs. They put on a great show and just when I thought the crowd was relatively tame a sizable group of people started throwing their bodies in every direction and mixing in a number of other odd maneuvers.
One final thought that crossed my mind during the night was how smaller shows like this almost always end up being a better overall experience than a big name act at a larger venue. TV Eye especially has a great setup and sound system that makes it one of the small clubs in the city right now.
Cheers and keep rocking!
