Blood Incantation released one of my favorite albums of the year and have been performing it in full on their current tour. Somehow this concert never popped up in my feeds and I completely missed the initial sale, so I joined the waitlist and patiently waited for the email from Dice saying you have 20 minutes to give us your money or forever live in regret. Lucky for me, I got a notification at 10:30 AM on the day of the show and was able to buy a ticket.
The announced set times for the show said the opener would play from 8-8:40 and headliner from 9-10:30 so I tried to plan my commute accordingly. I wasn’t interested in seeing the opener but Elsewhere can get packed and I didn’t want to get stuck in the back by the bar. I arrived a bit earlier than I wanted but the set times ended up being off by at least 30 minutes each so it really didn’t matter. The positive is I snagged a good spot near the sound booth but I also had to endure the entire opening act. No hate to the artist or any of the fans there in support but it was a total snoozefest for me. The music was extremely slow, it felt very depressing and not really the mood I was looking for at a death metal show.
The new Blood Incantation album is a true work of art. The tracks range from classic death metal riffs to progressive metal to interludes that sounds like Pink Floyd, yet it all flows seamlessly together. I’ve been wanting to see this band for awhile now but something always came up the last few times they were in town and I wasn’t able to make it. After almost missing this one as well, I was so thankful the concert gods came through for me. It is always cool to see an album performed in full but I especially enjoyed being able to hear the songs of a release that is still really fresh and I don’t have a strong reference point to compare it to yet. The musicianship and pure riffage of this band was awesome to watch.
After a sleepy opener, the crowd came alive for the Blood Incantation. There was a decent moshpit of respectful metalheads and plenty of bobbing mops of sweaty hair for the duration of the performance. All-in-all it was a great show and the band sounded great; I will definitely see them again.
Cheers and keep rocking!
